As you can see from looking at this site, Alanna Max is a small list with a very specific philosophy. We very occasionally consider submissions, but only those which fit our list especially well. Our few overworked staff are really busy editing and promoting our existing books, so we will not return manuscripts with comments or advice - sorry. You can submit via the Contact us page - no telephone calls please.
Our list is full up to 2020, so at present we are not accepting any submissions.
Advice We are often asked for advice from authors and illustrators - the classic piece of advice is to read 1000 picture books before you write one (there's another rule for fiction but we don't know that because we don't publish fiction).
We strongly advise joining the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. They run conferences, writing courses and you may find other authors and illustrators in your area who have a critique- or writing group that you can join (or you can start one with people you meet).
We suggest you research any publishing company (or agent) you make a submission to, and only submit material which fits their list (this sounds obvious, but we're amazed at the amount of fiction we are sent considering we don't publish any).
Just because we (and similar companies) are small, does not mean we are 'uncommercial' - we are a publishing business, it's what we do, it's what we live on. So please don't send books that are "not commercial enough for the big publishers".
Finally, please read our books carefully - we try to publish inclusively, but we do not publish issue books. If you don't understand the difference, you probably need to do more research.
You can start your research here or here or here (this is a US site, so the references are American, but the information and advice are excellent).
Specific advice on submitting manuscripts is here and here. We do accept email submissions - but considered ones (see above) and not simply a text pasted into an email. If you want a submission to be taken seriously (not just by us but by any publisher) it needs to be serious and professional. Authors, please don't send illustrated texts (unless you are an author-illustrator); illustrators - a brief bio and a link to your website/images is good. As we say above, we are a tiny team, so we will not respond unless we are interested in acquiring - for advice, please read all the links above (we've put a lot of work into sourcing them and providing links).
