Random thoughts from an accidental publisher
It's been a crazy few months at Alanna Books!
We've been very excited that Book Trust is piloting Lulu Loves Stories with it's multi-language CD as part of it's Dual Language offer. As part of th project, I've been travelling round the country giving talks about Lulu; Alanna's approach to inclusive books; my own views on how best to work with families who speak langauges other than English and realted topics.
The librarians, early years specialists and others in Lonon, Bristol, Manchester and Newcastle who've attended these talks have been wonderfully engaging and I've learned a lot - but it's been exhausting!
In between times, I've managed to fit in the YLG conference...
Then it was off to Coventry where Rosalind Beardshaw and I picked up the Coventry Inspiration Award for Lulu Loves Stories. The ceremony was amazing with champions of each winner telling the audience how much they loved the books. Our champion was an amazing Childminder, Lynne whose children all dressed up just like Lulu!
Of course the other excitement of the ceremony was the fact that Philip Pullman was in attendence - accepting his award Northern Lights with a wonderful speech in support of libraries.
Then it was off to Leicester to the UKLA Book Awards as publisher of A Splendid Friend Indeed by the wonderful Suzanne Bloom.
The grand tour ended with a trip to Sheffield where I was thrilled to meet Luol Deng and present him with a copy of My Friend Jamal (he is Jamal's hero in the story). You can read more aout it on my personal blog. Then it was into the home strait for the Reading Relay finale in Matlock in Derbyshire.
It's been crazy trying to keep things running while I was out of the office so much, but I managed to sign off on the print for a wonderful new book from Suzanne Bloom also featuring Goose and Bear and receive copies of the new Portuguese edition of Lulu Loves the Library from Alanna's new friends in Brazil -Pallas Editoria - a wonderful publisher with a great inclusive list. A perfect home for Lulu!
Now that my travels are over for the moment, I'm really enjoying taking time to work on the new Zeki book (watch this space).
